The petition to place a 1% sales tax ballot measure on the April ballot has failed to acquire enough signatures, though there's an appeal in process that might change that. Read more in the Courier.
UPDATE - The petitioners were given an extra week due to some technicality, and easily obtained the needed 22 extra signatures (they actually obtained 52 valid signatures). This issue will be on the ballot in April. Read 0 Comments... >> |

The large natural gas compressor, installed in the Stone Ridge neighborhood by Black Hills without the proper permits, is here to stay, for now at least. After the city council denied an application for a Conditional Use Permit, Black Hills took the city to court and has won the first round, with the judge deferring the decision to the state public utilities commission. Don't expect a decision from them to come quickly (summertime might be a more realistic goal). You can read more in the Courier. Read 0 Comments... >> |

The RE-2 school board took the surprising step of rejecting all three finalists for the Superintendent position, and have reopened the job search. While it's great to see tough decisions like that being made, what's a bit surprising is that the job opening is being posted in the same places as it was the first time. As Einstein once said, insanity is "doing the same thing over again and expecting different results." Well, maybe they'll have more luck this time around. You can read more in the Courier. There's a petition being circulated around town to add a ballot measure in April that would impose a 1% sales tax for the sole use of paying for construction of a Recreation Center here in Woodland Park (once paid for, the sales tax would expire). You can stop by Flutterbys & Party Bugs (110 W. Midland Ave, Suite D) or keep an eye out for one of the volunteers around town with it. Their website is here, and they also have a Facebook page here. Well, Christmas is over, what to do with the tree? Thankfully, the city, in conjunction with Teller County Waste and Rocky Top Resources, is offering FREE Christmas tree recycling. Remove all decorations (including tinsel!), then dump it in the dumpster located behind City Hall, just off Lake street. This service will be available from December 28th through January 12th. This Friday, from 3-5, will be the 'Winter day at the park' at Memorial Park sponsored by the Parks and Rec board (and various local businesses). This family event will feature a campfire (with marshmallows to roast, of course), hot chocolate, and cider, all at no cost. Bring ice skates, sleds, whatever you've got, to have some fun.
