First Alamosa dealt with salmonella in their water supply, now 240 homes in the Paint Pony subdivision of Woodland Park (north of 24 and east of 67) are being told their water may be contaminated. Workers found a few dead squirrels in the water tank; the water is still being tested but in the meantime residents of that neighborhood (or, more specifically, those who get their water from Teller County Water and Sanitation District One) need to take precautions such as boiling their water before drinking. You may not realize it, but there's an election going on now (the handful of political signs should have caught your eye by now, I suspect)! We're electing a new mayor and three new council members, and TODAY is the deadline to turn in your paper ballot. If you haven't already mailed it, you'll have to deliver it in person to city hall, just follow the instructions that came with your ballot.

The result is a quite reasonable $14.88 monthly rate for basic phone service (well, plus taxes of course). Not surprisingly, Qwest would like to abolish that restriction, increasing rates for basic phone service as much as 30% to $19.61 a month. They try to make the proposal sweeter by saying they'll invest half of the new profits in providing broadband services in undeserved areas of Colorado, though really, all they're saying is they'll take their profit and invest in ways to increase their profit in other areas of the state. Colorado Springs authorities are focusing their attention on the Woodland Park area in investigating the disappearance of 22-year-old Bekime "Becky" Elshani. Anyone who may have seen her or her boyfriend, Daniel M. Dereere Jr., last Saturday afternoon or evening are asked to contact the police; Dereere would have been driving a red Toyota 4Runner. Dereere committed suicide as police arrived at his apartment Monday; foul play is suspected in the disappearance of Becky. Anyone with information is asked to call detective Pete Quick at 444-7557 or the nonemergency police line at 444-7000. Callers who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 634-STOP. You can read more about this in the Gazette article.
