Ben Franklin Going out of Business

Our local Ben Franklin store, the last one in the state, has begun liquidating its merchandise and plans to shut its doors for good in four to six weeks, after serving the community for around 25 years. The reasons given are many and not surprising, including a sour economy, decreased tourism, and increased competition. Read more in the Gazette.

	Given that Ben Franklin is 11,000 square feet, I would guess this is the best opportunity for Kroger to expand City Market and their market share. They've been holding their own quite well against Wal-Mart and Safeway. This would make sense to me. On another note - you know I am still surprised by people who are shocked by closures like this. Well duh... what did you expect with Wal-Mart? Woodland Park relied heavily on (and paid handsomly for) an economic report by UCCS economist Fred Crowley who did little more than plug numbers into software and generated a report that heavily played down the threat of closures. It played right into the hands of the pro Wal-Mart crowd. But any intelligent being had to see this coming. The big boxes were bound to show up one day, but it still pains me to see the locally owned shops shut down. Nothing says community like shipping money out to Bentonville, Arkansas. Report
