McAfee Estate faces foreclosure PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 08 May 2009 07:48
The 280 acre, multi million dollar McAfee mansion near Woodland Park is joining the ranks of foreclosed homes!  Read the Gazette for more details.  What cost around $25 million to build is likely to be a real bargain for whoever bids on it in the June 3rd auction...the current owner paid $5.72 million, of which $3.2 million is still owed to the bank.

Hmmm... comment didn't go. So I post again...

I bid 2 dolla.

You know in some ways this whole thing really bothers me. McAfee made national headlines when he put his estate up for auction to the highest bidder because he effectively adopted an attitude of nonchalance. He really just walked away. And when asked about this, McAfee played the role of the mystic and talked all about not being attached to worldy things as his justification for his c'est la vie attitude about the whole thing (an attitude that is much easier to have by the way when you are worth a hundred million bucks - now maybe if he gave it all away I'd be more willing to buy his line).

But you miss the mark when you confuse detachment with not caring. And there is something to be said about being stewards of that which is entrusted to us. And in my opinion McAfee with a poor steward in this sale. In my opinion he should have been more conscientious in choosing a buyer, because though he walked away and really doesn't seem to care, there are people in this community who do, and who would of liked to see the McAfee estate continue on as a center for spiritual or community learning - something McAfee could of easily set up with an endowment. But he walked. The auction was ill conceived, and now as it heads into foreclosure chances are it will end up in the hands of developers. And rather than a center of learning we'll likely end up with more McMansions and subdivided ranchettes. It truly is the community's loss.
