Woodland Park has two great locations for ice skating in the winter. The first is the pond at Memorial Park downtown. While the ice can be rough sometimes, the views of Pikes Peak add to the experience. The hill on the west side of the pond can be fun for little kids to sled on, with a good sledding run sending you sliding across the icy pond.
The other skating location is the hockey rink at Meadow Wood Sports Complex, just west of highway 67. The ice on this rink is generally very good, though it's maintained mostly through volunteer efforts. A very detailed schedule provides specific times for either hockey games, open hockey, or open skating. If you show up during open skating, don't be surprised to see people abusing that time and playing hockey...just ask them to leave, and if you have any trouble, call the Parks and Rec department.
