Get ready boys and girls, the Carson & Barnes Circus is coming to town on May 30th! It's a three ring circus with the usual assortment of elephants, tigers, etc. What should be a happy day out is unfortunately tainted with allegations of animal cruelty brought forth by PETA. PETA is currently lobbying Mayor Crane and the city council to pass legislation prohibiting the use of the various devices used to inflict pain on elephants (and thus get them to do what the 'trainer' wants). PETA obtained some undercover video footage, which they've passed on to the mayor, which shows some disturbing images of elephant-training; PETA also claims that Carson & Barnes is "a chronic violator of the federal Animal Welfare Act", though I did not see evidence to back up this claim. Circuses can be great fun for kids, but there's no reason why they can't be structured in a humane, fair way. You can voice your support for such legislation by calling the city council at 719-687-9246.
